Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a light-touch that works with the Central Nervous System (brain, spinal cord and cerebrospinal fluid), and those parts of the body which form its protective environment (cranium, spine, sacrum and other tissues and bones of the body).
The practitioner listens with skilled hands to the body's movement, health, rhythms, pulsations and patterns of congestion and resistance. It is a gentle therapy which is deeply relaxing. It assists the body's natural healing processes, increasing physical vitality and well-being. It also aids in pain relief and encourages the nervous system, organs and musculoskeletal system to balance and heal.
The body's tissues contract in response to physical and emotional stresses, such as the injuries, sickness, birth process or physical/emotional trauma. Sometimes, particularly when the shock is severe, tissues remain contracted. This can restrict the body's functioning and vitality and give rise to problems like chronic pain, migraines, digestive disorders, depression and anxiety. Restrictions in the body show in the way craniosacral motion is expressed, allowing experienced practitioners to identify problem areas enabling the release of stress and tension, previously used to hold restrictions.
At the core of the body the cerebrospinal fluid, (which bathes and cushions the brain and spinal cord), expresses a motion in a tide-like ebb and flow involving all the surrounding tissues and bones. All bones, organs and other structures of the body have their own particular rhythms. These help to maintain and keep balance, throughout the entire body, distributing the healing and ordering properties of 'the breath of life' (a term used by Dr. William Garner Sutherland).
Sutherland was an American Osteopath who explored the craniosacral rhythm in great detail over a period of 50 odd years in the early part of the 20th Century by treating himself and working with his clients in his practice.
This therapy can be used to deal with all sorts of physical ailments, including migraines, lower back pain, menstrual cramps, TMJ, irritable bowel syndrome, pulled muscles, foot and leg pain, sleep problems, and pain resulting from automobile accidents.
It works very well on babies for birth trauma, reflux, colic, teething, constipation and general sleeping disorders.
